Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced an extension of the deadline for submitting applications for Building Occupancy Certificates to November 30. The certificate is an official municipal document confirming that a building is safe for use and complies with applicable technical and regulatory standards.
The extension, announced after the previous grace period, gives building owners and developers across Abu Dhabi additional time to complete and submit the documentation required to obtain the certificate. Without a valid occupancy certificate, buildings may not be legally authorised for use or occupancy, a gap that can carry administrative and financial consequences for owners and operators.
Abu Dhabi authorities have in recent years worked to make building permit and safety inspection procedures more systematic and transparent, with the occupancy certificate forming part of a broader framework to ensure the safety of the emirate's urban infrastructure. The extended deadline specifically targets buildings that have not yet completed their application process, giving them extra time to meet requirements.
Real estate experts in Abu Dhabi describe the move as a positive step to ease the administrative burden on building owners, particularly as a significant number of completed projects in the emirate remain in the process of finalising regulatory paperwork. The municipality is expected to continue digitising and streamlining the process in the coming months.
