Paediatricians and orthopaedic specialists in the UAE are urging parents to pay closer attention to unusual changes in how their children walk, warning that some of these signs can point to underlying orthopaedic or neurological issues where early diagnosis matters.
Dr Anand Gorva, a specialist in orthopaedic surgery at Medcare Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital, said parents should watch for persistent toe-walking beyond the early toddler years, marked inward or outward turning of the feet, noticeable bowing or knock-knees, sudden unexplained limping, abrupt changes in gait, frequent falls or balance problems, unusual tiredness while walking, and asymmetry between the two sides of the body.
Dr Nahed Mohamed Abdelgabaar Ali, a specialist paediatrician at Burjeel Medical Center in Al Shamkha, stressed that spotting these signs early does not automatically mean a child needs treatment. In many cases, she said, reassurance, observation and periodic follow-up are enough, and the child continues to develop normally without further intervention.
Dr Sruthi Sarath, a specialist paediatrician at NMC Speciality Hospital in Al Ain, added that when treatment is required, options range from physiotherapy and targeted exercises to orthotics or referral to a specialist. According to the doctors, the goal of such assessments is to catch underlying conditions early enough to benefit from timely intervention, rather than simply to "correct" a child's walking pattern for appearance's sake.
The doctors advised parents who notice any of these signs, particularly if they persist or worsen, to consult a paediatrician or orthopaedic specialist promptly to ensure their child's healthy development.
