The Westminster School in Dubai, part of GEMS Education, has announced the death of Anjana Sanalkumar, a teacher and examination officer who spent 33 years with the group. Her passing has been described by the school community as the loss of a figure who shaped the experience of thousands of students over three decades.

In a statement, the school said her presence would be remembered by generations of pupils and staff alike. "Your words, memories, and presence — near or far — mean more than we can express. Thank you for helping us honour and celebrate a life that touched so many," the school wrote in a message shared with families.

To mark her contribution, GEMS Education confirmed it will establish the Anjana Sanalkumar Memorial Scholarship at The Westminster School, intended to carry her legacy forward by supporting future students at the institution. Further details on eligibility and how the scholarship will be awarded are expected to be released in the coming days.

A memorial service for Ms Sanalkumar is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, at 3pm, with a livestream option made available for those unable to attend in person. The school has invited current and former students, parents and colleagues to join the service or share memories as part of the tribute.

GEMS Education operates dozens of schools across Dubai and other emirates and is one of the largest private education providers in the UAE. The announcement has drawn attention once again to how deeply long-serving teachers are woven into the identity of the schools where they work, and how their departure is felt well beyond the classroom.
