Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has issued new compliance guidance moving the age cut-off for Kindergarten and Grade 1 admissions to December 31 of the admission year, replacing the previous August 31 threshold, effective for the 2026-27 academic year.
The change applies across curricula operating in Dubai, including MOE, American, British and French systems, though the exact grade a child enters still depends on the specific framework. Under the American system, for instance, children born between January 1 and December 31, 2023 enter Pre-K, while the same birth-year cohort enters FS1 under the British curriculum and PS under the French system.
Schools that follow an April academic-year start will continue to apply the existing March 31 cut-off, KHDA clarified. The authority also confirmed that British curriculum schools may run readiness assessments for children born between September and December, and it has put in place a one-time transitional arrangement for children born in that window in 2022.
A notable clause in the guidance states that automatic grade promotion is not guaranteed when a student transfers between schools or curricula — each institution will assess placement individually. Education consultants say aligning the cut-off date across the emirate's various curricula should reduce confusion for expatriate families who move children between school systems, a common occurrence in Dubai given its highly international population.
Parents planning enrolment for the coming academic year are advised to check the specific age-to-grade table for their chosen curriculum directly with KHDA or the school itself before finalising documents, since placement details still differ meaningfully between the American, British and French pathways despite the unified cut-off date.
