The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) has expanded its dedicated taxi fleet for People of Determination and senior citizens from two vehicles to four. The new taxis are equipped with wheelchair lifts, secure wheelchair restraints and smart safety cameras, and are operated by specially trained drivers.
Mohammed Hashem Ismail, Director of the Transport Licensing and Control Department at RAKTA, said the fleet expansion will broaden dedicated services and deliver a safer, more reliable mobility experience for residents who rely on them.
Alongside the taxi upgrade, the emirate's Purple Route bus line has been extended by 14 kilometres, adding nine new stops and bringing the total to 12 daily trips. Holders of the Saqr Gold Card, issued to People of Determination, can ride RAK's internal public buses for free, while senior citizens receive a 50 per cent discount on the same routes.
Key destinations served by the dedicated routes include Obaida Allah Hospital, RAK Hospital and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah. Residents can call the toll-free number 8001700 for bookings or further information.
The move is part of a broader push by Ras Al Khaimah to improve accessibility across its public transport network and support inclusion for vulnerable groups — a trend seen across the UAE in recent years as emirates add specialised vehicles and services to their taxi and bus fleets.
