Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the upgrade of Oud Metha Road and Al Asayel Street, a project that boosts road capacity by up to 50 percent and slashes travel time along the corridor from 20 minutes to just five. The works included four new junctions, four bridges and two tunnels along a 14-kilometre stretch.
RTA director general Mattar Al Tayer described the project as one of the authority's key infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening Dubai's road network, saying the investment is designed to ease residents' daily commutes and reduce congestion in some of the city's busiest districts. the corridor's vehicle capacity has risen from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour. The upgraded road serves the Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha and Umm Hurair areas, and improves access to Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club.
The authority expects the project to serve around 420,000 residents by 2030. It forms part of Dubai's broader long-term strategy to tackle traffic congestion and expand urban transport infrastructure as the emirate's population and vehicle numbers continue to grow.
Transport officials say projects of this kind not only cut commuting times but also help lower fuel consumption and emissions by easing traffic flow. RTA has indicated that similar upgrades for other high-traffic corridors across the city are currently under review and planning.
