The UAE men's cricket team's One Day International status is hanging by a thread after a chastening Cricket World Cup League Two tri-series in Dallas, where the side lost all three of its matches. The campaign ended on Sunday with a five-wicket defeat to hosts the United States, completed with more than 11 overs still to bowl.

The batting form told its own story. After posting a solid 330 in their opening fixture, the UAE collapsed to just 134 against Namibia before managing only 213 in the decider against the US. Captain Harpreet Bhatia was candid afterwards, admitting the side had fallen roughly 40 to 50 runs short of a competitive total in the closing matches of the series.

Finishing bottom of the League Two table means the UAE now face a mandatory trip to the World Cup Qualifier Play-off in December, an eight-team event bringing together the bottom four League Two sides and the two winners of the Challenger League feeder competitions. To preserve ODI status — and the ICC funding that comes with it — the UAE will need to finish above both of those Challenger League champions.

The stakes extend beyond the scoreboard. Six of the UAE's 15-man squad hold ILT20 contracts worth between $10,000 and $95,000, deals that are now at risk because of a scheduling clash between the league and the December play-off window. With the tri-series exposing a clear shortfall in batting depth, the UAE's coaching staff have limited time to retool the top order before the qualifier gets under way, in a tournament that will determine whether the national side keeps its place among cricket's full ODI nations for the next cycle.
