Dubai's long-shuttered Lamcy Plaza mall in Oud Metha is set to return under a new name, The Plaza, with a reopening targeted for the first or second quarter of 2027. The mall first opened in 1997 and once housed more than 150 stores across five levels before closing following a fire in 2017.
The property was sold at auction for Dh188.7 million in September 2025, and asset manager Azure Properties has since taken charge of its redevelopment. No exact reopening date, tenant list, or layout has been confirmed yet, but the announcement has already stirred nostalgia among long-time Dubai residents.
Many who grew up visiting the mall recall its signature climbing clown figure on the facade and its indoor waterfall, both fixtures that made Lamcy Plaza a distinctive family destination in the 1990s and 2000s. Social media reaction since the announcement has largely centred on whether these elements will be preserved in the new design.
The redevelopment fits into a broader pattern across Dubai, where older commercial properties in central districts such as Oud Metha are being revived to meet growing demand for retail and mixed-use space closer to the city's core, rather than only in newer master-planned areas. Azure Properties has not yet detailed the retail mix or the scale of investment going into the renovation, and further updates on design and tenants are expected closer to the 2027 target date.
