A Dubai criminal court has sentenced five expatriate defendants to jail for orchestrating an elaborate insurance fraud scheme built around rented luxury cars. The court also imposed fines and ordered the group to jointly compensate for vehicles that were damaged or never returned, with deportation to follow once their sentences are served. the defendants used valid identification to rent high-end vehicles from Dubai car rental agencies, then deliberately failed to return them. They went on to alter the cars' registration documents and number plates before subletting the vehicles online at discounted rates. In the final stage of the scheme, some of those same sublet cars were involved in staged traffic collisions, with the group then filing insurance claims seeking compensation for the damage.

The operation came to light after a rental company noticed irregularities in its vehicle-tracking system and reported several missing cars to police. Dubai Police investigators traced the vehicles to underground parking facilities, where they uncovered the forged documents that led to the arrest of the entire group.

The defendants argued the matter was a civil contractual dispute rather than a criminal one, but the court rejected that defence. Judges found that altering official documents and staging accidents to file fraudulent insurance claims went well beyond a simple breach of contract, amounting to organised fraud.
