Frying Pan Adventures, the Dubai-based food tourism company founded in 2013 by sisters Arva and Farida Ahmed, has announced it will end its walking food tours of Old Dubai after 13 years in business. The company's final season will run from October through December this year, offering tours through the Spice Souk and traditional markets, along with abra rides across Dubai Creek and tastings of local dishes.
The founders cited a combination of factors behind the decision rather than a single cause: the challenge of scaling a small, founder-led business, quieter revenue during summer months, difficulty recruiting talent able to maintain the company's distinctive style, and, after restructuring the business following the pandemic, an inability to match its operational foundation with the financial resources needed to grow without losing its intimate character.
"Thirteen years ago, most people didn't know what a walking food tour was. We feel very blessed to have played a part in that story," Arva Ahmed said. She added that while the company invested heavily in training, systems and operations over the years, it ultimately could not balance growth with preserving what made the tours special.
Ahmed said she will continue telling stories about Emirati food culture through her YouTube channel, "Ditch the Silver," which explores the UAE's dining scene and lesser-known restaurants. The closure marks the end of one of Old Dubai's most recognised food tourism brands.
